Joseo Zine is a love letter to being your most unapologetic self, to continuing on in the face of adversity, especially in a colony where “opportunity” is scarce and the need to make ends meet grows more and more pressing every day. It’s a love letter to those who have found much of said opportunity within themselves and strive relentlessly to create the world they want to see around them, everyday.
It was born in Spring of 2021, 3605 miles away from Puerto Rico in Los Angeles, California. The creation of Sofia Rodriguez-Toymil and Jivani Roldan, two Puerto Rican kids who currently reside in LA, in an effort to remind ourselves that the spirit of home, of innate rebelliousness, is not tied to geography, but to something within us. Always.
Moreover, Joseo Zine has always been about community and celebrating where we come from. For that reason, all profits from this magazine go to Espicy Nipplez, a Puerto Rican transfeminist network that documents the lives of members of the TILQAPBG+ community, women, poor people, Black people, immigrants, people living with HIV, single parents and caretakers as well as indigenous people through popular media. Joseo Zine is about celebrating our peers and caring for community, regardless of where you find yourself.
Lastly, we acknowledge that this is only a minuscule fraction of the beauty and dimensions of Puerto Rican joseo. This has had such a long, intersectional, and important history on our Island, that we could never even begin to encapsulate in 103 pages.
However, we hope that you find this sliver of honesty, hope, and celebration as special as we do. It was made with the utmost humility and love.
